Commissioner Jose Rafael S. Cruz, Kit, as he is to his peers and colleagues, is the newest addition to the National Youth Commission family. Having been raised to parents who have dedicated their lives to public service, Commissioner Kit is now also kicking off a career, or perhaps better termed a calling, which he sees is going to be a long and winding but worthwhile and fulfilling journey.
On March 26, 2013, he was appointed by President Benigno S. Aquino III to complete the able roster of officials in NYC as Commissioner-at-Large.
Before he entered government service in 2008, Commissioner Kit also went through the same dilemma of finding his place under the sun, as every youth his age has to go through. He worked for the Business Process Outsourcing industry for a little while after graduation from college and later on secured a position in the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
He finished his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Ateneo de Manila University in 2005 and earned some Juris Doctor units from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 2012. He plans to continue his Law studies sometime in the near future in order to keep up with the ins and outs of work in a government agency and become even more adept in agenda-setting and policy-making.
Commissioner Kit may not have so much to boast in terms of experience in politics and public service, but his vision for the youth, coupled with his passion to realize the same, compensate for what he may probably be short of.
At present, he chairs the Commission’s Committees on Education and Employment. He takes these committees seriously and works towards accomplishing sustainable, inclusive and impactful policies and programs. He is ardently pushing for policies that would enable conditions for youth participation in governance, society and development and improve access to quality basic services and social protection. And while introducing enhancements and innovations, he remains completely supportive of the initiatives of his predecessors that are in line with his vision, by giving these initiatives, like the STRAW Desk, due course and continued implementation.
Commissioner Kit may be perceived as stiff and aloof because of his very manly deportment but his colleagues in NYC can attest to how grounded a man he is. He never fails to devote some of his time everyday bonding with the office staff, regardless of rank and salary grade.
Every end of a dense and exhausting day at work, he goes home to his two treasures: his beautiful wife, Ikai and their only little joy, Sofie.
